If you are thinking of moving to Ecuador, you may find the following lifestyle guidance document helpful. This guide sets out information for British nationals residing in Ecuador, including some useful reference points on how to drive in Ecuador, how to obtain an identity card and other local procedures.
As of 19 July 2012 (Resolución No. 0466), the requirements and procedure to obtain or renew an Ecuadorean identity card (cédula de identidad) have been updated.

The Ecuadorean “cédula” can only be obtained at the District Registry Offices in Quito, and main offices in Guayaquil and Cuenca (Jefatura de Registro Civil, Identificación y Cedulación).

As the identity card includes details on marital status, profession and the address district, to justify these details you need to submit one of the following relevant certificates:

  • marriage certificate
  • divorced legal certificate
  • spouse´s death certificate (for widows)
  • profession or academic degree registered at SENESCYT
